The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W510 digital camera
Gadgets and Gizmos
Cameras Galore
To combat declining camera sales, manufacturers are dropping prices for point-and-shoots -- frequently below $100 -- and proffering even more features for the money.
Camera makers revealed loads of models this week at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the most popular gadget show in the U.S.
Sony Electronics Inc., a company not exactly legendary for discounted cameras, will sell the Cybershot DSC-W510 ($100), a 12-megapixel camera with a 4X optical zoom -- more than what you'll find on most entry-level cameras.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W510 digital camera is based around a 1/2.3"-type, 12.1 effective megapixel Sony SuperHAD CCD image sensor with RGB color filter array, coupled to a Sony-branded 4x optical zoom lens. For 4:3 aspect-ratio shooting, the Sony W510's lens offers a 35mm-equivalent range from a generous 26mm wide angle to a moderate 105mm telephoto, while 16:9 shooting yields a sensor crop and 28 - 114mm equivalent focal range.
Canon, the market leader, will sell the 10-megapixel Powershot A800 for $89, though with a bare-bones 3X zoom.
Kodak also has two inexpensive offerings: the credit card-sized EasyShare Mini ($100) and the EasyShare Sport, an $80 camera that can be plunged in up to 10 feet of water, which is the kind of resilience normally found in a $200 camera.
So, if you’re on the lookout for a new camera – now is definitely the time. Get your wallet out and get with it.
